Dancing on the Water

July 12, 2007: For Immediate Release, Victoria, BC:

They're just as entertaining to watch as they are to ride on. The Lilliputian green, white and gold Harbour ferries playing the waters of Victoria's Inner Harbour and the Gorge waterway manoeuvre their way with panache as they carry passengers on short Harbour hops and longer tours. Beginning on the Victoria Day long weekend, and continuing until September 9, the agility of these little boats and the skill of their skippers will delight onlookers every Sunday as they perform the world-famous Victoria Harbour Ferry Water Ballet.

Set to the music of the Blue Danube Waltz, the ballet begins at 10:45 a.m.. A troupe of give ferries circle, turn and glide in an amazing synchronized 'dance' which can be viewed from the promenade around the Inner Harbour, or any number of waterfront locations in the vicinity.

A Victoria tradition for the past 15 years, the ballet was originally conceived by skipper Arnie Yates. The intricate manoeuvres are based on military marching formations and the RCMP's musical ride with prevision being of the upmost importance. In some formations ferries crossover in front of each others with just 12 inches between boats. Maintaining formation while executing complicated moves, choreographed to Strauss' well-love waltz, requires skill, training and much practice from the skippers selected to perform in the ballet.
